Sons and Daughters - A Book Discussion

Monday, June 16, 2025 20 Sivan 5785

7:00 PM - 8:15 PMThe Jewish Center Beit Midrash

The publication of Chaim Grade's long-awaited novel, Sons and Daughters, is perhaps Yiddish literature's most important event in a half century.  Considered one of the leading Yiddish writers of the twentieth century, Grade's novel was left uncompleted and could only be published after the translator obtained access to previously inaccessble notes.  A sprawling novel set in the interwar period, Sons and Daughters tells of an East European religious world turned upside down.  It is a family saga about wayward children, struggling parents, and vertiginous historical events.  Critic Adam Kirsch calls the book "quite possibly the last great Yiddish novel."

We will meet for a conversation about the book led by Joshua Freundel, Harvard Law School Research Associate and an avid reader of Yiddish literature. Participants are expected to have read Sons and Daughters prior to the meeting.  Registration will be limited to eighteen persons.
